Open Rhinoplasty Surgery RecoverySeptember 15, 2017
Open rhinoplasty is usually performed when the patient needs significant modifications to the nose shape and size. This cosmetic nose job procedure will involve a recovery process to ensure safe healing and predictable outcomes.
The nose surgeon will discuss about various aspects of open rhinoplasty, including the expected recovery at the time of pre-op consultation. Remarkable, stellar, and board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides open rhinoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood CA, and surrounding locations in this part of the country.
Post-Operative Care Instructions
The surgeon will discuss with the patient about the estimated downtime involved in open nose surgery, and when the patient can expect to return to their normal routine or go back to work. The patient and their caregiver will receive instructions about care during the recovery phase, which may include information on:
- How to manage the drains, if they have been placed
- When to visit for the removal of nasal packing and splint
- Normal symptoms that the patient is likely to experience
- Potential signs of complications when they should contact the surgeon’s office
- Refraining from smoking, certain medications and supplements, and vigorous activities for a certain period of time
Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort will occur in most cases during the first week after open rhinoplasty. The patient will experience puffiness in the face, and bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes. Cold compresses may be applied as per the surgeon’s advice in the first few days to minimize swelling.
Mild pain meds will help to provide relief in the first few days. The patient should keep their head in a raised position while resting during the first week. Although the patient will be confined to home and rest in the first week, they are encouraged to perform light activities and short walks to maintain blood flow in the incision sites.
Around the end of first week, the patient will have an office appointment with the surgeon for a review of the condition. Surgical packing, splint and bandages may be removed at this time. Sutures placed during open rhinoplasty may be removed in about 10 days.
The patient may return to their normal routine or go back to work in about seven to 10 days, but they will have to avoid excessive physical exertion for another week. Strenuous exercises, lifting, straining and bending will have to be avoided for about three weeks.
Mild swelling around the nose may linger on for several months, but will mostly not be noticeable to others. The patient will be required to avoid direct sun exposure in the reshaped nasal area for a few months. If the nasal bones have been altered, the patient will need a few weeks before they can wear glasses without special support.
As the swelling completely resolves, the full effects of rhinoplasty will be established. Results in this procedure are often permanent. Profound and impressive plastic surgeon Dr. Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood CA, and other cities and suburbs in this area of The Golden State for nose surgery and various other cosmetic procedures.
