Rhinoplasty (Nose Job Surgery)
The nose is a vital part of human anatomy, allowing us to breath, helping to clean dust, particles, and pollution from the air, and providing us with our sense of smell. But the nose also plays a critical role in our appearance, and a nose that is too large, too small, or has an unsightly shape, can throw off the entire aesthetic balance of the face. In fact, scientific studies have shown that the nose plays a crucial role in our society’s evaluation of facial attractiveness. Individuals who are unhappy with the size or shape of their nose, or feel that an unsightly nose is undermining their natural beauty, may be ready for rhinoplasty, a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose and possibly correct structural problems that interfere with the proper functioning of the nose.
Even the smallest changes to the size and/or shape of the nose can have a profound impact on the entire face, dramatically altering the appearance of other facial features, as well as on the overall facial balance. It is critical, therefore, to choose a surgeon with an artistic eye for aesthetic detail and the surgical talent required to translate a surgical plan into beautiful reality. Dr. Gary Motykie of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles is a world-renown, Board Certified plastic surgeon who specializes in designing and performing customized rhinoplasties for patients from around the world. He believes that each patient is unique and deserves more than a “cookie-cutter” approach, and he prides himself on taking the time to develop a customized surgical plan designed to enhance each patient’s unique beauty.
What is a Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to change the size, shape, and/or functional structure of the nose and nasal cavities, to alter the aesthetic appearance of the nose or to correct breathing problems due to abnormalities of the nasal cavities. Coming from the Greek “rhinos” (nose) and “plassein” (to shape), a rhinoplasty is more commonly referred to as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping”.
A rhinoplasty may be an excellent option for individuals who want to change the size of the nose itself, especially individuals who feel that their nose is too large or too wide for their face. A rhinoplasty can also focus on a specific part of the nose; for instance, the procedure could eliminate a bump or depression on the bridge of the nose, change the shape of nostrils that are too wide, upturned, or flared, or simply reshape the tip of the nose. A rhinoplasty is also an excellent option for individuals seeking to correct a crooked or off-center nose, or to correct the position and shape of an injured nose.
However, a rhinoplasty is not always a cosmetic procedure. Rhinoplasty can have a reconstructive purpose for individuals who have birth defects or to correct an injury. Most commonly, rhinoplasties are used to correct breathing problems stemming from structural abnormalities of the nasal cavities. For instance, rhinoplasties are often recommended to treat individuals with a deviated septum, which can cause breathing problems, chronic stuffiness, post-nasal drip, and even snoring. A rhinoplasty can also treat collapsed nasal valves and reduce enlarged inferior turbinates, both of which can also contribute to significant breathing problems.
